Written by Lois Lumbra — As I start this column we are in a new month, an extra hour of sleep this morning, and some needed rain.
This has been a week of up and downs for me. Monday I had to get some medicine and that has caused me to be nauseous and that is very uncomfortable. Tuesday, I got up and ready to go out with my Red Hat Friends, but an hour before I was to go, I was surprised when MY sister Ruth and hubby Roger Newhall were coming onto our porch, they came up from Ascutney, Vt. They wanted to surprise me and they sure did, and we had a nice visit, she had made me a birthday cake and wanted to bring it up special to me. They were also out viewing the foliage, up this way it was almost on the ground, from all the wind we have endured lately. Wednesday was my birthday and Penny came by early to take me out for breakfast..but not feeling well I told her we would another time. She stayed and visited and for lunch we ordered sandwiches from “Sticks Country Store” and had our grandson David Newton (Penny’s son) come and join us. Thursday remained rather quiet as it was raining most the day, and I prepared Halloween bags. Friday, was wash day, and we raked up some leaves later in the afternoon. Friday afternoon, Maggie Elkins had planned to have her annual carving party with her local children that have been coming for the past few years. I thought by 6:30 or so they would be carving away and I went over to watch and they were all done and headed for home, SO, I got to see the finished jack-o-lanterns. Mrs. Elkins had made pizza, cookies and they each had a soda. They all have a great time. Saturday morning when I got up and looked out the front window, I said “what in the world went on during the night” the trees here in the Village were decorated in toilet tissue, the paper became moist from the dampness in the night and froze. Maybe I sound nuts, but it looked nice for Halloween decorations. The tissue that hung from our tree was frozen and looked like ribbon. Later it was all taken down before the rains come. Saturday forenoon our daughters Veronica and Penny came by. Veronica’s job kept herfrom coming by sooner to give her Mom a birthday hug. We also went into Enosburg and did a little shopping, and upon returning home she cut my hair and had tea and a homemade doughnut, before going home. Then later on Saturday, we had 95 kids come by for treats. They were dressed in such cute costumes, even their parents.
And then its Sunday, going to Church is always a special day for me. We had a good turnout today, the first Sunday of the month is always communion. Then following our service today. Johnny and Christina Youland had made plans with Pastor Ed Sorrell to come and show their slides of their summer vacation to Europe, followed by a Pot-luck luncheon. The whole family John, Sharon, Johnny and Christina all enjoyed their cruise, and toured the Cathedral of Mallorca, the Cathedral of Eucharist, of the sea, light and space. Unreal the size of these buildings that were built soooo long ago. There were no big cranes to take the materials up thousands of feet, very incredible, and all the beautiful statues. They walked the streets of Pompeii and Barcelona. The children had a very educational vacation and so enjoyable. They did an exceptional job as they told the story to us in attendance. A very Special Thanks to Johnny and Christina!!! We all enjoyed your presentation!!!
10/27, Betsy Snider had invited the Green Mountain Ruby Reds to her home for a pot-luck luncheon and tea. There were 13 members in attendance and following luncheon several ladies stayed and played their fun game. We always have a good time and thanks to Betsy for having us all there.
