ARE YOU PREPARED TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF & YOUR HOUSEHOLD FOR 72 HOURS IN CASE OF A DISASTER SITUATION?
Dear Members of the Montgomery Community,
Montgomery Emergency Services are working together to help you prepare for and survive a disaster situation, whether it is weather-related or man-made.
Here are a few important steps that we strongly encourage you to take:
1. Read and follow the advice in the Family Emergency Preparedness Workbook from Vermont Emergency Management. Copies are available at the Town Office. Please note that you can report a disaster situation and request assistance by calling 911. Make sure to display your 911 address in a visible location from the road on your property. This and other valuable information is in the workbook.
2. Complete the voluntary Disaster Preparedness Resident Survey, either in person with an Emergency Services representative or at home. Blank survey forms are available at the Town Office or on-line at: www.vermont-towns.org/montgomery/pdf/survey.pdf. Completed forms can be dropped off with the Town Clerk or mailed to P.O. Box 356, Montgomery Center, 05471. This survey will help Emergency Services identify residents who may need immediate help in a disaster situation and respond to these residents as quickly as possible.
3. To help you maintain communications when the power goes out:
• Keep a non-cordless phone in a convenient location in your home so you can call out or receive phone calls in the event of a power outage, when cordless phones do NOT work.
• Keep a battery-operated radio and extra batteries on hand so you can tune in for current information and instructions related to the emergency.
In the event of a disaster situation, the Public Safety Building at 86 Mountain Road (Route 242) will become the Office of Emergency Management (OEM). A secondary location will be the school or any other town building that may be available depending on the type of event we will be dealing with. The main telephone number will be 326-4555. If you have a scanning radio we will be operating on 153.98 MHz VHF. During the event we would conduct an assessment of the community, and any at risk populations would gain top priority status for critical needs to be met.
No one wants to experience a disaster situation – but in the event of a disaster, we want to have the best possible outcome for all. By following the steps above, you will help to ensure that you and the members of your household are better prepared to deal with the unexpected.
